I want to take the time to thank all the parents who have donated items for the art room wish list. I've had many of you bring me recyclables, as well as new purchases and gift cards. I am in your gratitude. The Roberts community overwhelms me with their generosity. Your support of the art program at Roberts is essential, so thank you very much for all you have done and continue to do.
We have been very busy in the art room, and it has been such a blast creating wonderful art with your kids. First, let me begin by congratulating all the students that will be featured in this year's directory with their really cool drawings. The students all did such a wonderful job, which made it so hard to narrow the drawings down for the directory. Audrey Fowler's drawing from Ms. Berens 5th grade class will be featured on the cover...Way to go Audrey! Other 5th grade drawings that will be in the directory include; Marilyn Lindsey (Ruff), Sanjana Dhakshinamoorthy (Shahriari), Rowan Marshall (Ruff), and Claire Kemper (Shahriari). In Kindergarten Colin Hancock (Punch) and Maahi Vaswan's (Bowman) drawings will be included. The 1st grade drawings featured belong to Jack Botros (Boston) and Cecily Tardy (Estrada). The second graders included are Trinity Yun (Britton) and Moira Hagen (Haynes). Logan Stephens (Engen) and Francesca Camerlo (Saathoff) are the 3rd graders included. Finally, the fourth grade directory drawings chosen belong to Nicolas Aviles (O'Reilly) and Sylvia Wehrer (Johnson). Congratulations to everyone that will be featured in this year's directory and to all my students for doing such an incredible job. Pictures coming soon. Following the completion of the Roberts directory drawings, each grade level began a new project (about 3-4 weeks ago). Lesson planning and prepping projects for 6 different grades can be daunting, but so worth it because of the success i am seeing in art class each day. I am consistently amazed by the talent I encounter in my classes, and really look forward to parents seeing what their kids have been up to. My Kindergarteners are doing a project titled "We Scream for Ice Cream," inspired by the artist Wayne Thiebaud, in which they are creating three waffle cones filled with three different flavors of ice cream. They are putting the whole composition together using oil pastels and collage techniques. Their ice cream's are pretty adorable and their discussions with their classmates and I on their favorite ice cream flavors has been so much fun. We should be wrapping up the project in a little over a week. The 1st graders are making "Kandinsky Trees," inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky. There compositions are mixed media, utilizing paint and collage to paint a beautiful background in an impressionistic style, drawing and cutting out a gorgeous tree, which the students then decorate with cut circles, paint and glitter. Their artwork is turning out to be so gorgeous and the kids are having a blast. The 2nd graders are creating these awesome "Color Wheel Eyeballs." The project first began with the students learning about color theory, and then they had to put that knowledge to use by mixing their own colors to create a large color wheel. The color wheel is now the iris of the eye they are constructing. This coming week students will choose a skin color to surround their eye, and add eyelashes or an eyebrow to complete the project. They have really been having fun with their eyes, and I look forward to them sharing it with you. My 3rd graders are making "Warm and Cool Color Trees." We began by reviewing color theory, and then they proceeded to draw these gorgeous trees surrounded by a grid throughout the entire composition. The Tree they drew is in black sharpie with beautiful line design work on the inside. Surrounding the tree will be cool or warm colors and on the outer most part of the composition will either be warm or cool colors. The interior portion surrounding the tree will be done in oil pastels, while the exterior will be completed using paint. Their drawings are large and they have been doing such an incredible job rising to the challenge. You should see how proud they feel with their accomplishments thus far. 4th graders have been busy working on their "Zentangle Flowers." This complicated, yet completely doable project has been coming along so wonderfully. The students began by having two sessions in class, in which they practiced copying zentangle designs and then created their own. This exercise helped to give them confidence when it came to the actual drawing/painting. A week ago they drew their large quarter flower during a class demonstration, and this past week they painted a beautiful watercolor pattern to surround that flower. This coming week students will begin inserting their zentangle designs into their flower using 3 different sizes of sharpie marker. You will be amazed at the work. I am definitely impressed! The 5th graders have been hard at work creating an "Optical Illusion" drawing. This drawing is big (18'x18"), which is causing much excitement in regards to the possibilities. First, they began constructing the skeleton of the drawing with organic vertical lines. Then they added one organic horizontal line through the center of the drawing, splitting it in two halves. All the lines above the horizontal line curve from side to side like a rainbow, and the lines below the middle horizontal line curve from left to right like a smiley face. Once the drawing portion was complete and adjusted, the students sharpied all their lines. Their drawings will be filled with color (color theory options) using prismacolor pencils. They have been practicing shading and highlighting techniques I've demonstrated using these pencils, and many have already begun adding color to their large drawing. Some are still practicing and gaining confidence in preparation for their larger drawing. Again, I am amazed at how the 5th graders are rising to the challenge of such a complex and rich project. I am so proud of them and their determination, and I think they are proud too! |
